The winter months can be dark, dismal, and, frankly, depressing. The long, dark nights and the poor weather can make our homes feel cold and unappealing.
With the new year, it’s a great time to make a new start, and inject some colour, light and freshness into your home. And the bedroom is a great place to start – it’s where you begin and end each day, so adding a new lease of life in this room is bound to give you a new lease of life too.
- Lighting. It might seem like a straightforward thing, but getting your lighting right in your bedroom can make a massive difference, and it’s a really inexpensive way to change the way your room looks. This might be buying a new lamp for your bedside table, or changing the bulb to something more soothing, or alternatively, something brighter for a fresher feel. You can also add unusual lighting to your space to add some sparkle – fairy lighting will not only change the way a room looks dramatically, but will also add a feeling of magic to the bedroom.
- Natural lighting. Increasing the amount of natural light in your bedroom will also help brighten it up. This needn’t be expensive – you could replace heavy curtains with thinner ones for the upcoming warmer months or even consider a blind.
- Mirrors. Using mirrors to reflect light around the room to make it look bigger is a trick that’s long been used by interior designers. They needn’t be large – just well placed. Use them to bounce light around the room from the windows and you’ll see a massive change.
- Tidy up! Again, this might seem relatively straightforward, but having a good tidy up and de-clutter of your bedroom could make a difference in allowing light to travel around it. Put away any black fabric, as this soaks up light, and use brightly coloured storage boxes. Maximise space under beds and in wardrobes.
- Brighten a wall. Rather than revamp or redecorate your entire bedroom, why don’t you just repaint or re-wallpaper a single wall? Making a feature wall is cheap and effective. Position a bright statement wall (preferably with subtle metallic hints) opposite a light source will add an abundance of light to your bedroom.
- Cheap accessories. There are lots of cheap accessories that you can use to brighten up your room. Why not try some faux flowers in a bright spring colour, or some colourful frames with photos of friends and family inside? These will all make your bedroom feel new.
- Candles and scents. You can also utilise the sense of smell to refresh your bedroom. Buy candles or plugins with light fragrances which will ensure you’re greeted with a feeling of freshness when you come home.
